Since 1980, China’s sanitary napkin industry has gone through four stages including market introduction period (1980-1900), rapid growth period (1991-2000), stable development period (2001-2010), and integrated growth period ( From 2011 to present), foreign-funded enterprises have entered China during the period of rapid growth and occupy nearly 90% of the domestic high-end market. During the period of stable development, local enterprises have begun to grow, which has curbed the development of foreign brands to a certain extent, and consumption has risen steadily.
In recent years, due to the increased functional requirements of Chinese female consumers for sanitary napkins, and the emergence of tampons and other products on the market, the output of sanitary napkins has fluctuated slightly. The output of sanitary napkins has maintained a growth trend from 2014 to 2017, and that in 2018 Decline, the output was 92.01 billion pieces, with a year-on-year decrease of 1.49%; the output of sanitary napkins rebounded to 94.8 billion pieces in 2019, with an increase of 3.03% year-on-year.（Click to share to LinkedIn）

It can be seen that the market value of sanitary napkins has great potential.
What are sanitary napkins?
Sanitary napkin is a kind of absorbent material. The main material is high molecular polymer and high molecular polymer composite paper formed by cotton, non-woven fabric, paper pulp or a composite of the above materials. The side design is mainly used to prevent side leakage . Downstream sales terminals mainly include supermarkets, convenience stores, toilet vending machines, e-commerce platforms, etc.（try Suntech sanitary napkins machine）
Structure of sanitary napkin
The sanitary napkin is divided into three layers, namely the surface layer, the absorbent core, and the bottom layer. The back glue of the sanitary napkin is an impermeable material, which can keep menstrual blood in the sanitary napkin. The materials of each layer are bonded with hot melt adhesive.
The surface layer is the part directly in contact with the skin. Its material is soft. The surface weave and indentation can affect the anti-osmosis effect (dryness) of the sanitary napkin.
PE perforated film surface layer and cotton surface layer are the two most commonly used materials. The PE surface layer plus the microporous design can prevent menstrual blood from re-infiltrating and give users a dry feeling. However, the material is hard and some users will cause Allergic reaction; due to the improved cotton absorption design and the availability of perforated and composite materials, the market share after 2001 has gradually become higher than that of PE sanitary napkins.
The inner layer is mainly composed of high molecular polymer and high molecular polymer composite paper formed by cotton, non-woven fabric, paper pulp or a composite of these materials, which is used to absorb menstrual blood flowing out. The side design is mainly used to prevent side leakage, because it will present an angle with the sanitary napkin body when it is used, and it is easier to rub against the groin area. Therefore, sanitary napkins with soft side materials are more favored by women. The adhesive backing of the sanitary napkin is an impermeable material, which can keep menstrual blood in the sanitary napkin. In the 70s and 80s, a self-adhesive adhesive backing was developed to facilitate the fixation of the sanitary napkin on the underwear.
Sanitary napkin classification
According to national standards, sanitary napkins can be divided into three categories from the surface material:
Dry mesh sanitary napkins refer to sanitary napkins made of various perforated films as raw materials for the surface layer of sanitary napkins, mainly polyethylene, commonly known as PE film.
Cotton soft sanitary napkins refer to sanitary napkins made of various non-woven materials on the surface of the sanitary napkin, which are mainly polypropylene, commonly known as PP.
Pure cotton sanitary napkins refer to sanitary napkins whose surface layer is made of pure cotton materials, which are mainly pure cotton non-woven fabrics.
How to judge the quality of sanitary napkins?
The product types and functions of women’s sanitary napkins continue to innovate and update with the development of national consumption and the gradual maturity of the industry market. Wing-protected sanitary napkins have almost completely replaced straight sanitary napkins, "ultra-thin", "soft cotton", "Antibacterial" and "comfort" have become synonymous with the development of sanitary napkins, and "Chinese medicine care", "incense deodorization", and "green degradable" have become new profit points for the development of sanitary napkins. With the improvement of women's consumption consciousness, the requirements for quality are getting higher and higher. What kind of sanitary napkins are of high quality? It can be tested in the following aspects.
1. Water absorption capacity test
The water absorption capacity of sanitary napkins is not as fast as possible, nor is it as slow as possible. During the water absorption process of high-quality sanitary napkins, the rate of absorption of water should be uniform and there will be no back seepage.
Test process: Open the sanitary napkins you usually use and place them on the table. Fill each sanitary napkin with 30ml of water. Observe the speed at which each sanitary napkin absorbs water. When all the water is injected, use a dry sheet. Lay the paper towels flat on the sanitary napkins that have absorbed water, and then press them with the palm of your hand to observe the humidity of the paper towels. The higher the humidity, the greater the chance of secondary infection in the private area. When the speed of absorbing water is too fast, and there is no re-seepage after heavy hand pressure, such sanitary napkins will absorb other water in the body instead, resulting in dryness and even itching in the private area. At the same time, observe whether the sanitary napkin has side leakage protection or side leakage prevention strips. Without side leakage prevention sanitary napkins, menstrual blood will quickly overflow from the surrounding area, and even often overflow on the bottom pants, which is ugly and difficult to wash.
2. Surface chip material inspection
Why test the surface material? Because this is the place that is in direct contact with the privacy, if the surface material is not pure cotton but made of other plastic or chemical fiber products, it will definitely cause discomfort in the privacy for a long time.
Test process: Take out the surface chips of the sanitary napkins and ignite them for a burning test. Observe the burning process. There is a pungent odor, black smoke, and squeaking noise, and there is a glue dripping out during the burning, and the burning is Lumps are generally chemical fiber products in plastic boxes, while the pure cotton chips are off-white in the combustion process, without smell, no noise, and become ash after burning.
3. Water absorption factor test
Many sanitary napkins made of pure organic cotton have no water absorption factor in their internal water absorption. For example, a certain imported card has no water absorption factor. Therefore, the absorption process is very slow. There are no transparent water-absorbing crystals. The water-absorbing crystals directly determine the absorption speed. The more crystals, the faster the absorption speed, but the absorption speed is too fast, but it will absorb the body's useful water. Therefore, the water absorption factor must also be appropriate.
Test process: Take out the water absorption factor from the sanitary napkin and put it in a disposable water cup, pour about 60 ml of water, wait for 30 seconds, then put the water cup upside down on the palm, and there is water left, indicating poor water absorption. It forms a cup-shaped solid and can lock water, which means that the water absorption effect is particularly good.
4. Air permeability test
Many sanitary napkins are habitually labelled as "natural sanitary napkins that can breathe". In fact, whether they will breathe or whether the air permeability is good or not, first check whether the bottom film has vents, and then test it for a while.
Test process: Fill a cup with half a cup of hot water, buckle one side of the sanitary napkin base film on the mouth of the cup, then take a cup upside down on the cup, and then observe the mist on the cup, there is obvious mist and mist in a short time More and more, the air permeability is better, on the contrary, the air permeability is poor.
5. Bottom adhesive
Viscose is generally divided into two types, one is industrial glue and the other is edible glue. Industrial glue has high viscosity and is easy to remain on the underpants. Edible glue is relatively safer. The test method is to stick it tightly to the desktop, and then tear it off to see if it is torn or deformed. If there is adhesive residue on the desktop, it is likely to be industrial adhesive.
However, according to relevant experts, although it is still impossible to determine whether viscose is a harmful chemical substance, if this substance is not completely eliminated, it will directly threaten women's physical hygiene. Therefore, for safety reasons, it is recommended that all female compatriots remember to separate menstrual underwear and normal wear, or use menstrual-specific underwear may be more beneficial to health.
